Refer A Patient
General practitioners (GP’s) and physicians can directly refer eligible patients for diagnostic home-based (unattended) or laboratory-based sleep studies when an approved assessment tool has been used.
They can also refer eligible patients with suspected sleep disorders to qualified adult sleep medicine practitioners and consultant respiratory physicians for further investigation, without referring for a sleep investigation.
When directly referring patients for a diagnostic home-based or laboratory-based sleep study to confirm a diagnosis of sleep apnoea, general practitioners and physicians must determine the patient’s eligibility using approved assessment tools and the following criteria:
Epworth Sleepiness Scale score ≥ 8
AND one of the following:OSA-50 score ≥ 5
STOP-BANG score ≥ 4
Berlin Questionnaire – high risk
Diagnostic Sleep Investigations
Please ensure all sections of the Sleep referral form are fully completed, including the OSA-50 and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) screening tools.
OSA-50 score of 5 or higher
AND
Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score of 8 or higher
If the patient does not meet the criteria, refer them for a consultation with a Sleep and Respiratory Physician.
Our Sleep and Respiratory Physicians are listed on our referral.
Treatment Sleep Investigations
(CPAP, MAS, Body Positioning)
Please note that all referrals for treatment sleep studies must come from a qualified Respiratory and Sleep Physician. General Practitioners (GPs) and other Practitioners cannot refer patients directly for a treatment sleep study. Instead, GPs must first refer their patients to a Respiratory and Sleep Physician for a consultation.
